The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban affairs watches over the nation's banking industry. It writes legislation that regulates the Federal Reserve System (the controller of the currency), the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation as well as taking part in overseeing international economic policy. At one time concerned with housing and urban issues, the Banking Committee now almost exclusively oversees the U.S. financial system.
